Who is OPPY?
First of all, you’re probably wondering what an OPPY is.
OPPY is nicknamed after the Ophthalmosaurus, which literally means Eye-Dinosaur. OPPY has the largest eyes in proportion to its body of any creature ever known. The OPPY Family consists of Kind, Friendly, Caring, and Concerned Dinosaurs.
OPPY Family members want to help children become the best they can be by setting good examples. They work at various “human” jobs such as Airplane Pilots, Astronomers, Doctors, Food Experts, Musicians, Health Food Specialists, Scientists, Space Travelers, Sports Heroes and many more. Each one has his or her own story to tell in a short, entertaining manner.
What is the OPPY Club?
The OPPY Club is a nonprofit organization of the Philadelphia Retina Endowment Foundation, and is dedicated to character-building and education of children. The primary purpose of the website is to educate children about the importance of good eyesight and life in general through the use of games involving OPPY. As a parent, the OPPY Club will provide your children with hours of safe entertainment.
As with any other website involving children, it is the responsibility of parents to manage the amount of time their child spends on the website, as well as monitoring their child’s participation, and anything involving membership.
Playing is the best part of any day. So we’ve made several games that your child (or you) can play. At the same time, they’ll learn about many interesting topics through the Stories of the Month, and express their artistic ability using the OPPY coloring book which can be downloaded or used online.
Wear Your OPPY Colors
Members can show off their unique style with new OPPY clothing and other items like Mugs, backpacks, caps…Go OPPY! These items are available in the OPPY Stuff section.
Kids can email OPPY for information, education, games, or just because they want to interact with him. OPPY reads every email and will try to answer each one.

Learning and Development
The OPPY games expose your child to concepts in problem solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and even math. (Hopefully they won’t notice).
Our games give your child the chance to practice their hand-eye coordination and motor skills, not to mention the opportunity to hone their typing skills that they’ll need in the “real world” someday.
We like it when kids work together, and our games give them the opportunity to do that.
Not only will they learn about how the human eyes work in a way that is entertaining to kids, they also learn about the prehistoric era during which the Opthalmasaurus walked – and swam – the earth.
Our Game Plan
We think kids are great. Our games are a major attraction to them, but we strongly believe in education and character development. And we believe that every child should have a safe place to play and learn the models of good behavior as demonstrated by the OPPY Family members. Everything we do stems from our values and commitment to safe and fun online play.
Friendship from Interaction
A sense of belonging is important to kids, so we’ve developed the OPPY Club in such a way that siblings or friends can participate together.
Kids are naturally curious — about everything. Through the email interchange with OPPY, they’re free to ask any question, or discuss any appropriate topic, and know that they’ll get a friendly answer.
No Boredom Here
We know that kids love to discover and explore new things. We’ve packed the OPPY Club with games and activities to keep them busy for hours, and then come back for more.
History of the OPPY Club
The idea for the OPPY Club originated over a million years ago. In 2006 the idea was resuscitated by Dr. Larry Donoso, an ophthalmologist associated with Wills Eye Institute, and the Director of the Philadelphia Retina Endowment Fund. He felt that children need a better understanding of medicine to eliminate the fear associated with medical examinations. And so began the origins of OPPY, and eventually this website, where children can play, connect and have fun online. That mission will never change.
